Flamingos are unique birds. Among it’s vibrant pink feathers, long stick-like legs, and the way it walks will make learning how to draw a flamingo very fun.
A flamingo can be drawn in very easy steps.
Having the right step by step pictures will make drawing this exotic bird a synch.
Let’s get started!
Drawing Supplies Needed
You can use any drawing supplies to draw a flamingo, but here are the best tools for drawing.
Step 1:
Start with a circle
Step 2:
At the front of the circle create a line that hooks downwards
Step 3:
At the back of the circle create an S shape with 2 lines
Step 4:
Close off the hooked line to the circle with a shorted line below it, this will be the beak! It should look like one end of a boomerang
Step 5:
Where you finished off the snake-like neck from before we will continue it by extending it upwards to about the end of the neck, and then bring it downwards. End it off with a little U shape to guide our feathers later.
Step 6:
Add a few more tail feathers curving it upwards just a bit before going towards the front of the body where that large incline is. In a curving motion, we’re going to create feathers on one of the wings.
Use all the teachings we’ve gone through with other birds so far to guide you as you go longer with your feathers the further from the top of the body you get. Finish off the body with a little curved belly line connecting the front feathers to the tail feathers.
Step 7:
From the bottom of the longest wing feather make two thin lines going downward in a slight funnel shape toward the top. then at the head, we’re going to make a little droplet of water shape coming inwards towards the middle of the circle.
Step 8:
At the widest point of that shape, we just made a small circle for the eye. Now let’s go back to the legs. About 2/3 down the leg make a small bump on the back
Step 9:
Erase the overlap of the leg and the knee joint!
Step 10:
Now let’s flesh out those body feathers! The key here is to make sure you do not use any straight lines. The feathers always curve to the shape of the body!
Add as many as you need to fill the space and don’t be afraid to overlap, just make sure they’re curved with the body line.
Once you finish, erase all the overlapping lines on the head and add a small hooked line to the bottom 1/3 of the beak.
Finally, let’s make the back leg! From the tip of the last tail feather extend a line outward and end it in a little square hook.
Step 11:
Continue the line from the squared hook shape of the second leg in a slight curve towards the front leg. Just before the lines overlap, curve the line downwards in a short motion.
Step 12:
On the front leg make a short curved line as well where the back line (the one with the knee bump) ended.
Step 13:
Much like a duck foot, we’re going to make a small webbed foot that’s shorter at the top to mimic perspective! Then, on the back make what looks like a hooked claw, but keep it soft so there are no sharp lines. The rest of the foot will be seen as hidden behind the front leg.
Step 14:
Color in a few of the tail feathers and add black coloring to the beak, but be sure to add more to the top of the beak than the bottom.
Finally, add a pupil to the eye by putting a dot in the center of that small circle. Before finishing this step add a bit of a ‘cup’ shape to the top of the front leg.
Step 15:
Erase all overlapping lines and take this step to refine your line art.
Step 16:
Color and finish!
